Democratic Congressional Candidate Pledges to Cosponsor "We the People Amendment" if Elected
New Lisbon, WI — "We cannot restore faith in our elections or in our democracy without getting dark money out of our campaigns," declared Ginger Murray (D-New Lisbon), who is running for Wisconsin’s 7th Congressional District. "Corporations and billionaires should never be able to buy our elections. If elected, I will fight every day to remove special interest dark money from our elections — and return power to the people where it belongs."
Murray announced her strong support for HJR54, known as the We the People Amendment, which would accomplish four key goals: end corporate personhood; reverse the Supreme Court’s 2010 decision in Citizens United v. Federal Election Commission; allow Congress and the states to regulate money in politics; and mandate public disclosure of all political contributions and expenditures.
Murray, an attorney, characterized the Citizens United ruling as wrongly decided and deeply harmful to American democracy, noting that it has effectively allowed unlimited corporate spending in elections.
"I believe in free speech," said Murray. "But you don’t have to be a lawyer to recognize that corporations are not people and money isn’t speech."
In too many campaigns, spending by corporate-backed dark money special interests routinely dwarfs candidate spending. Without mandatory disclosure, voters have no way to follow the money.
The We the People Amendment has been cosponsored by more than two dozen members of Congress. "I can’t wait to get to Congress to join the movement to make this important constitutional amendment the law of the land," said Murray.
"While some of my opponents may be raking in donations from their special interest corporate backers, I’m proud to focus on the grassroots and community-driven fundraising that reflects the real values of the Northwoods."
